25 More farmers going organic
RANJANI RAGHAVAN
|
The Indian Express -
08 Aug 2007
Pune : Go organic, the Maharashtra Organic Farming Federation (MOFF) has been telling this to farmers across the State, especially those from the suicide zone of Vidarbha. Not a single organic farmer in Vidarbha has committed suicide. And more farmers are taking to organic farming” said Diliprao Deshmukh Baradkar , Vice president of MOFF, who was in Pune recently for a workshop. Data compiled by the MOFF in June suggests that over 26,000 farmers paid Rs. 51,000 each to register with the organization for their training workshop, farming kits and have switched over to organic farming. Last year, from June 2006 to March 2007, the MOFF ran Farmers suicide Prevention Mission in Vidarbha. In all, 7,384 farmers from Amravati district , 5,500 from Washim , 2750 from Yavatmal and 2,500 from Wardha registered with us to learn and adopt organic practices,” he said . The six districts were chosen because of their high suicide rate. Organic farming reduces production costs drastically, because the inputs are available within the farm. Cow urine and neem trees are used to repel pests. Manure is made in the farm . Traditional seeds which are more water efficient and can be reduced next year, are used” said Vijay Patil a farmer from Buldhana who made the switch after chemical farming became unsustainable for his. The tendency to depend on BT cotton and other genetically modified crops, which incur maximum cost of cultivation on seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and weed management and are labor oriented had increased the input costs and set debt traps when the monetary returns were low, said Deshmukh Monoculture is a reason for suicide, said Vasant Futale , from Rawalagaon in Amravati district. He was in Pune recently to attend a workshop on organic farming in Vidarbha and Maharashtra cotton is an obsession, he said “ Growing cotton for years reduces fertility as the land is allowed no time to replenish itself he said The best-suited crop in the climatic conditions is jowar Futale said, Rotating crops by showing jowar every alternate year would resuscitate the soil with nutrients. but the market price for jowar is Rs.4 to 5 per kg. not enough for farmers to survive . Cotton means more money . he said “Growing only one crops attracts pests in great numbers, increases the use of pesticides, in creases inputs cost and leads to be debts he said Over the last few years, farmers across the State have given up fertilizers and monoculture farming and moved towards organic farming to escape debts.
